What Finding Footing feels like

The Finding Footing stage of job loss is when the first real signs of a path forward appear. There may be active conversations with employers, or a business idea that is taking form, or a direction that is becoming clear enough to move toward. The horizon, which was blank in earlier stages, has acquired some definition. This is not yet resolution, but it is meaningfully different from the earlier stages of pure uncertainty.

This stage often also involves a shift in the identity questions that have been running underneath everything. Not yet answered, but beginning to be answerable. Who am I professionally, when I am not the person who had that job? What kind of work do I want, not just what can I get? The enforced reflection of earlier stages begins to yield something at this point - not a complete answer, but a clearer set of questions, and some early responses.

People at the Finding Footing stage of job loss are often at a threshold that is both hopeful and fragile. The progress is real but not yet confirmed. The emotional volatility of the earlier stages has eased, but has not fully resolved. What tends to be most useful at this stage is connection with people who are at the same threshold: close enough to the struggle to understand it, far enough from the acute phase to have some perspective on it.
