What Early Days feels like

The Early Days of recovery is when the most acute fragility of the Just Starting stage has eased slightly, and something that could tentatively be called a foundation is beginning to form. Routines are establishing themselves. There may be a support structure in place: a program, a therapist, a peer community, a combination. The daily work of recovery is becoming more familiar, even as it remains demanding.

This stage is also when many people encounter what is sometimes called the pink cloud: a period of surprising manageability, even optimism, in the weeks after getting sober. It is also when the pink cloud fades, typically around months two to four, and the underlying emotional work becomes more present. Both the cloud and its fading are normal parts of this stage. The crash of the fading pink cloud, if it arrives, is not a sign that recovery is failing. It is a sign that the real work is beginning.

People in the Early Days of recovery often find the most useful peer connection is with others who are at the same building stage: far enough past the immediate crisis to be building something, close enough to the beginning to still understand the fragility. The perspectives available from this particular vantage point are specific, and they are most honestly offered by people who are currently inside it.
